Major Races

Elitloppet May 26 at Solvalla racetrack.

The world’s most prestigious sprint race!

The story of Elitloppet starts in 1952 when Solvalla celebrated its 25th year as a race track. The track wanted to celebrate with a big international race. Since the race was meant to be a celebration, it was first called Jubileumsloppet and did not take the name Elitloppet until the year after. Back then the international participants traveled by train, in difference from today when the horses from the United States have their own private plane. The biggest legend in the history of Elitloppet is Stig H. Johansson who has participated in 28 editions of the race and won 6 times.

Elitloppet is traditionally raced on the last Sunday of May. Solvalla racetrack holds races thru Friday to Sunday which makes up a meet, known in Sweden as "The Elitloppet weekend". The three days are generally well-visited and is considered one of Sweden's biggest sports events. A total of over 50,000 people attend to the event at Solvalla. Having experienced this” trotting meet” once, you always want to come back. This year Elitlopp weekend will take place between May 24 and 26, 2019. The winner is decided through two elimination races and a subsequent final on Sunday May 26, and both the eliminations and the final are raced over a mile (1609 meters).

For the moment it is unsure if last year’s winner Italian Ringostarr Treb will be able to defend his title, fingers crossed for that. Elitloppet 2019 will be the Farwell race of Swedish Champion Readly Express winner of Prix d’Amerique 2018. But he will be challenged by amongst others the French Horse Aubrion Du Gers and Swedish Propulsion who both of them are aiming to win this year.

Jubileums pokalen

The story of Jubileumspokalen starts the same way as Elitloppet, as a celebration for Solvalla. This time the celebration was for Solvalla’s 50th year as a race track. Jubileumspokalen is the fourth stage of the Sweden Major Races 2019 series. The race was from the beginning open for all horses, but in 2009 it was decided that it would be a 5-year-old race competition. Since then we have seen a lot of stars win the race: Nuncio, Iceland, Varenne and Zoogin to mention a few. Last year’s winner was Makethemark, trained by Petri Salmela and driven by the Swedish champion driver Ulf Ohlsson. The circle around Makethemark was excited since he has been in many major races but never won one until this.
