Jubileumspokalen, August 14 at Solvalla racetrack

Come and watch the best 5-year-olds in the world!

The story of Jubileumspokalen starts the same way as Elitloppet, as a celebration for Solvalla. This time the celebration was for Solvalla’s 50th year as a race track. Jubileumspokalen is the fourth stage of the Sweden Major Races 2019 series. The race was from the beginning open for all horses, but in 2009 it was decided that it would be a 5-year-old race competition. Since then we have seen a lot of stars win the race: Nuncio, Iceland, Varenne and Zoogin to mention a few. Last year’s winner was Makethemark, trained by Petri Salmela and driven by the Swedish champion driver Ulf Ohlsson. The circle around Makethemark was excited since he has been in many major races but never won one until this.

Since 1977, Jubileumspokalen have developed and is now Solvalla’s largest event besides Elitloppet Saturday and Sunday. This year’s runners will compete on Wednesday August 14th for the first prize of SEK 1 million. Jubileumspokalen is a Group I International race, which makes 10,000 people each year gather to watch the best 5-year-olds compete against each other.

This magical night is a celebration to the fantastic Swedish summer. Therefore, on this special event, Solvalla turns orange. With orange flags during the opening ceremony, an orange blanket to the winner, and if you are lucky the whole sky turns orange just in time for this amazing race.

Elitloppet

The story of Elitloppet starts in 1952 when Solvalla celebrated its 25th year as a race track. The track wanted to celebrate with a big international race. Since the race was meant to be a celebration, it was first called Jubileumsloppet and did not take the name Elitloppet until the year after. Back then international participants traveled by train, today horses from have their own private plane. The biggest legend in the history of Elitloppet is Stig H. Johansson who has participated in 28 editions of the race and won 6 times.
