Svenskt Galoppderby July 15 at Jägersro race course
A thoroughbred race in Sweden Major Races series!
One of two thoroughbred races in Sweden Major Races is Svenskt Galoppderby. The name Derby was created during the 1700th century when the development of thoroughbred racing took place. Lord Derby and Lord Bunbury tossed a coin to determent which one of the gentlemen that would get to name a new big race for 3-year-olds. Lord Derby won, and the first Derby took place in 1780.
Svenskt Galoppderby is also called the “Blue Ribbon” of Swedish thoroughbred racing and has been the most colorful and classic event in Sweden since 1918. A horse only has one chance in its life to participate in the race that measures 1,5 miles. It is a stake race with no further limitations to who can entry. The most successful trainer in the history of the race is Wido Neuroth with 12 victories. Last year’s winner was the mare Dorcia, trained by Lennart Reuterskiöld jr. The total purse of the race is SEK 3 million!
The race also includes a tradition of celebration and festivities. Every year a traditional hat parade takes place and awards the best hat carrier of the year!
