One of the hot horses for Elitloppet.
The fastest trotter in Sweden so far this year and in the form of his life.
Stefan 'Tarzan' Melander sounds pleased when we talk about Disco Volante - the favorite in this spring's first leg of The Paralympic Trot.
"He feels really good and I'm actually very optimistic".
On Saturday Solvalla will host the first of four legs of The Paralympic Trot which will go off as the third leg of V75®.
Stefan Melander's star trotter Disco Volante might have taken further steps forward this season and will be the big favorite in the race where a win means that the horse is qualified for the final at Åby last weekend of April.
The first major race of the spring in Sweden has for decades been The Olympic Trot. As of 2020 the name is changed to The Paralympic Trot.
A cooperation has been initiated between harness racing and the para-sports and the setup is the same - with a few legs and a final with SEK 1.5 million to the winner.
"There are some really good horses as it should be in this type of race. But I have a good horse too" says Stefan Melander laughing.
The seven year old has already won three times in the gold division this year. All three at very quick winning times and all three wins came in short distance (1,640 meters) races.
He won his most recent start at the kilometer rate of 1:10.1, which is also the fastest winning time in Sweden so far this year.
How will he do on the middle distance?
Disco Volante is a world class trotter over the sprint distance and last year he finish second in the biggest race in Italy, Gran Premio della Lotteria. But over the middle distance he has been struggling as older.
He has lost eleven straight races on V75 when the distance has been 2,140 meters or longer.
"Of course this time it's 2,000 meters instead of 1,600 which he's done so well at this year. But he has won a lot of races on the middle and long distances too" says the Solvalla trainer, who also leaves his horse singled in the V75 Expert Picks of the week.
Invited himself to Elitloppet
The driver Ulf Ohlsson was bragging about the horse in the winner circle after the blowout win from the lead in his most recent start on V75 in Halmstad.
Disco Volante has never been better said Ohlsson who also pretty much invited himself and the horse to Elitloppet the last Sunday in May.
Most things point towards him getting to the lead again on Saturday, this time from post five behind the gate.
"Disco drew a very good post position and he's quick behind the gate. The way I see it, he's got a very good chance. He actually feels very good in training and it looks interesting, he will race barefoot upfront again" says Stefan Melander about his horse who will face horses like Conrad Lugauer's Gareth Boko and Rickard Svanstedt's Baron Gift.
The stable also has 4 Zack Zoomer and 12 Snowstorm Hanover in this leg of The Paralympic Trot. What do you think of their chances?
"Snowstorm was second to Disco in his last start and he's in terrific form. He really is in great form now. But post twelve, no he lost the draw. We lay low. I wasn't completely satisfied with Zack Zoomer's last start. But that was only his third start of the year and my horses tend to need more starts. We would be very happy if he and Snowstorm could be third, fourth, fifth" says the Solvalla trainer.
Another horse in good form is 8 Digital Class in V75-6, the final of Klass I. But he's got a tougher post position now...
"Yes, he's certainly in top form. He never got in the race in his last start when he sat far back in the field and the tempo was slow. We hope they'll go 1:10 the first kilometer this time. It could be tough anyway with tough opponents and the worst post position. Maybe he's an option if you have a few horses on your ticket".
Finally, 4 Sir Q.C. (V75-5) in the final of the silver division. The horse hasn't really showed any form lately?
"Silver is also a tough division. He raced well a couple of starts ago and he might be on his way back. But we lay low. If Q.C. could be third, fourth, fifth something, that would feel like a win".
