V75®: "Lozano di Quattro feels fantastic in training – exciting with a new driver"
Lozano di Quattro has made 47 career starts, all with Tobias J Gustafsson as a driver.
But on Saturday, the horse gets Carl Johan Jepson in the sulky – as he is chasing a pink Elitloppet ticket in "The road to Elitloppet".
"He felt fantastic last time I trained him, and it will be exciting with Jepson," says trainer Per K Eriksson.
The reason for the driver's change is that there is interest in purchasing half of Lozano di Quattro from the United States. In the initial phase of a possible impending deal, there is a request to see the horse race with a top driver in the sulky. This Saturday will be the first time that Lozano di Quattro, in his 48th career start, will race without Tobias J Gustafsson at the reins.
"It's an owner from the Jonas Czernyson stable in the United States who wants to purchase half of Lozano di Quattro. He wants to see the horse race with one of the best drivers. He asked for Björn Goop, but since he's already busy, Carl Johan Jepson is not a bad alternative. No deal has been done yet; we will wait and see how he performs on Saturday. If he is sold, we will keep half the horse ourselves, and he may be sent to the United States to race there. In that case, Jonas Czernyson will train him over there," says Per K Eriksson.
"His gait wasn't perfect last time out – was throwing some steps in"
Lozano di Quattro has made three starts this year. After finishing third in his seasonal debut, he was second behind Double Deciever in 1:10.1. Last time out in Finlandia-Ajo, he delivered a blasting speed down the backside when Tobias J Gustafsson asked him to go. He came up outside the leader in the last turn before he got tired. Lozano di Quattro was unplaced in 1:10.8.
"Even if it was a fast burst of speed, you could tell that his gait wasn't perfect. He was throwing some steps in, but he is sound and we didn't have to do any work on him," says Per K Eriksson, and adds quickly:
"He felt fantastic last time I trained him, so everything suggests that he will he will be performing at his best now. I think he will be a notch better than in Finland."
Has Lozano di Quattro changed as a horse compared to last year?
"We let his head down a bit, since he kept it pretty high earlier. Now we let it down a bit. I think he has matured and gotten a bit tougher. We have been a bit more aggressive with him, and it feels like this is the year for him."
"Best possible post position – a nice feeling"
Lozano di Quattro, who has earned SEK 1.8 million, has the chance to secure a pink Elitlopp ticket if he wins Prins Daniels Lopp (V75-6), also known as "The Road to Elitloppet," at Gävle. He was lucky in the draw and will start from post position three behind the gate in the one-mile race.
"It was a nice feeling, and post three is the best possible post he could have. He can leave fast, and it will be exciting with a new driver. Jepson gets to try him behind the gate before the races on Saturday. He will race with four aluminum shoes," says Per K Eriksson.
So, you will wait to pull his shoes until a possible Elitlopp start?
"We take it one race at a time."
