V86 Super Days (Wednesday): Walmann hopeful of another win – "Good chance to win"
He has won five out of his last seven starts and has not been beaten when staying flat in almost a year.
Cashman J cruised to another win last time out after a layoff – and has perfect conditions for another big performance in V86.
"The horse looks very good. He should be right there battling for the win again," says trainer Roger Walmann.
Jägersro and Solvalla share Wednesday's V86 Xpress, which is also the first stop of V86 SuperDays. That means five weekdays with V86 through next Wednesday, October 7. We spoke with Roger Walmann, who has four horses starting this Wednesday, and there is one horse in particular who stands out. It is Cashman J, who has taken five wins in his last seven starts (made breaks in the other two) and has not been beaten when staying flat since November of last year. He has won with ease every time, and most recently he pulled away in fine style down the stretch from the lead with his tail straight out. It was his first start after a six-week layoff and the distance was 2,640 meters. Cashman J blasted away from the gate and almost followed the starting gate for the first few strides before taking the lead. The five-year-old gelding has won over sprint, middle and long distances. In other words, he is versatile.
"4 Cashman J (V86-8) has developed well over the past year and looks very good. He put in a great performance last time out and won easily without being empty at the finish. He is quite versatile, but I still think the sprint distance is his best event. He is also very fast out of the gate, which is a major advantage in today's racing where post positions mean so much," says Roger Walmann when we catch up with him over lunch on Monday.
"Good chance to win and should be the favorite"
The Solvalla trainer is naturally pleased with Wednesday's conditions, where Cashman J has post four behind the gate over the sprint distance in a handicap with ten horses. He will once again be driven by Rikard N Skoglund, and the Norwegian trainer is optimistic.
"It looks good and I followed the entries and knew he would get a first tier post. I haven't been that keen on letting him step up to the Silver Division already, so we'll race in these kinds of races first."
"The horse is in very good shape and will put in a good race, there's no doubt about that. You always have to race for it and you can't just put the shoes out there and expect to win. But he should have a good chance to win this race and I think he should be the favorite."
"He'll be right there battling for it, at least, and we're making no changes. It will be barefoot all around and an American sulky again," says Walmann.
"Very capable horse – can be right there at the end"
The Solvalla trainer has three more horses starting in V86, and all three are in the second leg. Walmann has the most faith in the horse with the best post, Padron, who comes off a win last time out after a fast finish.
"I can start by saying that these are three horses I expected more from. But that's how it is with young horses sometimes. In terms of ability, they're similar, but 3 Padron (V86-1) is the one who is furthest along right now. He is a strong and nice horse who was good in his win last time out. The post is good, but he's not a front-running horse because he isn't that fast out of the gate. He should be able to be right there at the end and we're making no changes."
"8 Capo (V86-1) is capable of more than he has shown, but from post eight he'll have to be driven conservatively and I'm keeping expectations low for now."
"10 Cash Redemption (V86-8) is a very capable horse, but he has also had some issues with his gait. He can make breaks at any moment, and that's what happened last time out as well. Otherwise, Ulf was very pleased with how the horse felt before the break, but they have to stay on their feet to the finish. He should be considered an outsider and there will be no changes," says Roger Walmann.
